About Tui Na Centre – Rozman Method©

Tui Na Centre – Rozman Method© massage has been developed specifically to be used by parents and therapists of children with special needs – Autism Spectrum Disorders, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy.

What is Tui Na and how it works

Sometimes called ‘Chinese massage’, Tui Na is an oriental massage therapy that has been used since ancient times. It is a division of traditional Chinese medicine and is considered in China to be of equal importance and effectiveness as acupuncture or herbal medicine. It has an extensive tradition as a holistic healing art, with no reported side effects.

Tui Na uses the traditional Chinese medical theory of the flow of internal energy, called Qi, through the meridians as its basic therapeutic orientation. Through the application of massage and manipulation techniques Tui Na seeks to establish a more harmonious flow of energy, allowing the body to heal itself naturally. In Western medicine terms the Chinese system of meridians tracks major arteries, nerves and lymphatic vessels, and many of the meridian massage points correspond to nerve bundles or muscle trigger points.

In addition to being used to address physical problems, chronic pain conditions and sports injuries (all conditions that in the West would be treated by physiotherapy, osteopathy and chiropractic), Tui Na is also used widely in China to address chronic problems such as headaches, migraines, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome and sleep problems. It is thought to balance the autonomic nervous system by reducing anxiety, aggressiveness and irritability (‘fight or flight’ sympathetic responses) and increasing relaxation (‘rest and digest’ parasympathetic responses).

Regular and targeted massage and touch-therapies in general have been shown to stimulate the senses (touch, hearing, smell and vision) and blood flow; regulate sleep, improve digestion and mood; stimulate liver and kidney activity; stimulate production of serotonin and melatonin and lead to improved regulation of cortisol and stress levels.

Tui Na Centre – Rozman Method© massage is a complementary therapy with no reported side effects and in conjunction with suitably qualified medical treatment can be used for conditions such as autism, cerebral palsy and Down syndrome.

Tui Na Centre – Rozman Method© design & principles

Tui Na Centre – Rozman Method© was developed by Leonid Rozman through his desire to support his own special needs son’s development and improve his quality of life. Prior to this, Leonid had over 20 years of experience in Eastern philosophies, acupuncture and bodywork, with Tui Na massage in particular. (Read more about Leonid and Rozman Centre team here).

Tui Na centre – Rozman Method© is based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Tui Na massage. It stimulates internal healing by means of gentle touch and stimulation of body meridians and acupuncture points, and combines with it some aspects of Western-style massage therapies.

Tui Na Centre – Rozman Method© is affordable, safe, enjoyable and simple to learn. Once learned, it is carried out by parents at home. It does not involve third party involvement or travel to therapy centres. Instead, parents take hands-on action and become closely involved in their child’s development.

Parents as therapists

The overall guiding principle in the design of Tui Na Centre – Rozman Method© was to involve parents as closely as possible, allowing them to actively shape their child’s journey.

Daily massage performed by parents provides an opportunity for the child to benefit from regular interaction and physical contact with their parent in a safe and familiar environment of their own home. If carried out at regular times, at bedtime for example, the massage can become a part of child’s bedtime routine, which can help improve regulation, relaxation, and restfulness.

Tui Na Centre – Rozman Method© massage sessions last between 20 to 45 minutes, depending on child’s individual requirements and specific family circumstances. The sessions can be easily incorporated into daily life and can create novel opportunities for innovative and rewarding play and interaction. Parental feedback indicates that the overwhelming majority of children come to enjoy the sessions and will often initiate the massage themselves.

When performed in a playful, relaxed and enjoyable manner, regular massage can therefore help to build a close relationship, strengthening that special bond between the child and their parent.
